Holy Week in Sahagun
The origins of this event (which is occasionally nicknamed ‘facundina’ from the name ‘Facundo’ in honour of one the town’s patrons) date back to the early processions held in the municipality in the 15th century.
Two processions are held today: La Vera Cruz and Jesús Nazareno. A document dated 1639 refers to the Brotherhood of La Vera Cruz as the oldest of the two existing associations, taking the brotherhood named after Valladolid as its model. Local names associated with the brotherhood include Jesús Nazareno ‘el pobre’ (‘Poor’), and La Soledad ‘pequeña’ (‘Small’).
