These three million year-old caves are situated to the south of the province of Ávila, in the Tiétar valley. These caves lie in a large area of crystalline limestone pleats which have been reduced by the action the air and wind to small hills, which now rise beside the rivers Arenal and Avellaneda.

The caves were rediscovered by chance in 1963 and after much preparation work, were opened to the public one year later. The Gran Sala (Great Chamber) of the cavern has many fantastic formations: columns, stalactites, gours and numerous layers of clay covering other galleries.
