A fine example of Romanesque art
Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza
Situated in the province of Burgos, the River Arlanza encircles the ruins of the historic Monastery of San Pedro Arlanza, a superb example of Romanesque art. It was founded by Count Gonzalo Téllez and his wife Lambra, and dedicated to Saint Peter on 12th January in the year 912.
The double cloister and guest quarters were renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries, although it did not escape the devastating effects of the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal. The church has a characteristically Romanesque floor plan and the exterior reflects the influence of the Late Romanesque style.
