It is a defensive building with origins as old as the walls to which it is attached. The building was part of one of the abutments of the missing San Juan gate that served as the entrance to the city, as a defensive bastion that protected the northeastern flank of the city. The House of Chains is the counterpoint, within the defensive system of the city, of the Alcázar. The Counts of Chinchón and Marquises of Moya, lords of the house since the end of the 15th century, were at the same time mayors of the Alcázar, that is, they held in their hands the key to the two most strategic nuclei of the city.
