Walls and gates
Wall. The Roman Gate
The Astorga Wall was built in the early 4th century AD. for eminently defensive purposes. It has more than 2 km. in length and is built with masonry linked with mortar, which supports a core of Opus Caementicium or Roman concrete. Throughout its long history, it has been the object of multiple destructions and restorations. It has well-visible semicircular towers around the Gaudí Palace, in whose vicinity is located one of the ancient gates of the enclosure, the Roman gate, found in the course of archaeological excavations. The span is about four meters wide and was flanked by two towers or bastions with a semicircular floor.
