The Sierra de la Culebra is a transition setting between the plains of northwest Zamora with the mountains of the Lago de Sanabria Natural Park and Sierras Segundera and Porto, a territory of accentuated contrasts and unique ecosystems. These characteristics, together with a low population density, make it possible to maintain an important presence of the Iberian wolf, acting as a regulator of a growing cervid census and becoming one of the most balanced faunal communities on the Peninsula.

The landscape, in the form of a mosaic due to the action of man for the use of natural resources, has left extensive patches of heather, alternating with plantations of pine forests and forests of holm oaks, cork oaks, strawberry trees and oaks.

The wolf has been part of these lands since time immemorial and today it is one of the best preserved populations in Western Europe, which does not prevent the Sierra de la Culebra from inhabiting a good number of vulnerable species such as the wild cat, the long-nosed viper, the golden eagle, otters, martens or the Iberian desman, among others.

In this unique natural environment, surrounded by an extensive forest, is the Iberian Wolf Center of Castile and León, perfectly integrated into the environment and imitating the buildings associated with the wolf as a "wolf job", in addition to responding to all the eco-efficiency criteria.

The exterior has two large fenced enclosures of three hectares each in which a pack of wolves live in semi-freedom that can be seen from the observatories integrated into the landscape or from the different paths, some adapted for people with disabilities. In addition, a video surveillance system guarantees the necessary control for the well-being of the animals.

Once inside the main building, the exhibition and didactic proposal proposes a tour of all aspects related to the canid, its relationship with humans, since this coexistence has been the most intense with a wild species, the result of which has generated an important cultural and material heritage.

The distribution of the spaces of the Iberian Wolf Center obeys its own aesthetics depending on the theme, addressing historical and anthropological themes, the importance and functions of the forest, popular architecture as an exponent of a way of life and, of course, the laboratory. . As a whole, it offers a vision of the wolf and man in a multidisciplinary and multifaceted way through biology, archaeology, folklore, local history, ecology, architecture, philology, conservation and environmental management models. sustainable.

The Center invites reflection to better understand a territory through a participatory and exciting experience.
