Steve Everett is an alcoholic, womanizing investigative journalist. His lifestyle has not only ruined his professional reputation but also destroyed his marriage. He finds an unexpected opportunity for redemption when he's assigned to interview a death row inmate on the eve of his execution. Despite this, he decides to investigate on his own, and certain clues lead him to suspect that the man about to be executed is innocent. However, he has very little time to gather the necessary information to secure a pardon and prevent the execution.
