Ten years of searching reveal an ancestral treasure that connects us with the soul of our land of Burgos

Demetrio Delgado Rodrigo, co-author with J. Emilio Blanco Castro, will be at the Miguel de Cervantes library to present his book "The Memory of Plants"

This is a rigorous and deeply human study that recovers traditional knowledge about the flora of central, eastern, and southeastern Burgos province. This book contains 200 fact sheets on useful plant species, corresponding to more than 280 wild and cultivated taxa, based on the direct accounts of 133 informants (71 men and 62 women) from 95 towns and villages.

Through meticulous fieldwork, the following have been documented: "455 vernacular names; 440 photographs, accompanied by plans, maps and cliseries that contextualize the habitat and use of each species; an ethnobotanical diversity that includes 128 wild species; a taxonomic representation with 68 plant families. By biological types: 31 tree species (19 native and 12 non-native), 30 shrub species, 126 herbaceous species and 6 climbing or lianoid species."

The study also compiles valuable folk knowledge: medicinal, culinary, festive, religious, and technological uses (tanning, dyes, perfumes, etc.); dozens of recipes and practical formulas; as well as proverbs, rhymes, riddles, and curiosities that form part of the intangible heritage of this land. It also includes text sections dedicated to traditional trades that are now almost lost, with an approach applicable to environmental education.

This book is, at the same time, a scientific inventory, a tribute to popular wisdom, and an invitation to rediscover the relationship between people and plants throughout time.
