Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra is the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. During the 18th century especially, it influenced the development of the student character of the city, both on an urban, architectural, artistic and social scale. Examples of this are the Paço das Escolas, the Graça and Jesús schools, the Joanina Library, the Botanical Garden, the Alta de Coimbra, the Rua da Sofia and secular academic traditions and practices. Since its origin, the university has been a center that promotes scientific knowledge and a reference for the Portuguese language and culture throughout the world.
