第一本为现代欧洲语言编写的语法书与萨拉曼卡有关。萨拉曼卡大学教授安东尼奥·德·内布里哈 (Antonio de Nebrija) 于 1492 年撰写了《卡斯泰拉纳语言语法》。这为西班牙语奠定了基础。
萨拉曼卡大学从 14 世纪到 15 世纪一直到现在，一直致力于传播西班牙语。该大学由阿方索九世于 1218 年创立，始终坚持传播西班牙语和促进人文科学的宗旨。作为西班牙最古老的大学，萨拉曼卡大学自成立以来的 800 年间一直是文化的中心。
