This route takes you through the places travelled by the knight Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, on his march towards exile, which was decreed in the 11th century by King Alfonso VI. History intertwines with legend on this route that follows the path the warrior took through the provinces of Burgos and Soria, according to El Cantar de Mio Cid, the oldest preserved Castilian epic poem.
In these regions, Spain’s mediaeval past appears to come to life. On your way you will find fortresses (such as the Caliphate of Gormaz), castles, churches and monasteries that comprise beautiful Historic-Artistic Sites such as Covarrubias, Santo Domingo de Silos, Peñaranda de Duero, Langa de Duero, San Esteban de Gormaz, Burgo de Osma and Berlanga de Duero, and, of course, places closely linked to the history and legend of the Cid, such as Vivar del Cid, San Pedro De Cardeña and Burgos, the city of El Cid par excellence.
This historical route, also known as The Exile Route, is fully signposted. It is surrounded by rich landscapes; valleys populated by juniper, oak and holm oak trees, which alternate with non-irrigated farming land and grapevines that produce fruit for wines of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. The route crosses many Natural Areas of which the juniper groves of Arlanza and La Yecla valley, the Sorian stretch of the river Duero, and the Altos de Barahona stand out.
