Situated on the border of the province of Palencia, Montealegre de Campos looks out over the Tierra de Campos region. The castle stands at the highest point of the town, which boasts views over the entire area and was once an important political and social centre.

The layout of the town dates back to the Middle Ages, with the castle forming the focal point, together with the church that stands next to it. The main thoroughfare leads up to the fortress, in front of which we find a parade ground or defensive area.

The main street is lined with traditional houses, the rear of which back onto a smaller street. The lower end of the town houses a small chapel, washing site and watering trough. A fine example of simple beauty.
