Church of great simplicity and austerity. It has a classical ground plan with a single nave and a short-winged transept covered with a barrel vault and a semi-spherical cupola.

The present denomination, Lois, is a derivation of the term Loides, which might come from the Basque word Lodi, meaning 'clay place'. Three bishops were responsible for the erection of the church, together with Jerónimo R. Castañón, who founded the school-church of Lois, also known as the Catedral de la Montaña (Mountain Cathedral). Fabián Cabezas was the architect. Practically the totality of the neighbours of Lois belonged to the aristocracy, as is shown by the large number of coats-of-arms gracing the house fronts.
