Although its origins date back to the 10th century and it was part of the first walled area of the city of Toro, its construction dates from the 15th century. Witness to important historical events, the Alcázar de Toro constitutes an outstanding landmark in the whole of the city.

After the division of León and Castilla in the middle of the 12th century, Toro is assigned to the Leonese kingdom. In 1199 Alfonso IX married Doña Berenguela and he would be the king who between 1188 and 1195 began the construction of the castle and the walls. Sancho IV will donate Toro and his alfoz to his wife María de Molina in 1283 who will rebuild the old castle giving it its current shape. In the S. XV the Alcázar de Toro was the last stronghold of Juana la Beltraneja in these lands. In the middle of the XIX century the castle was destroyed for the most part having been used as a powder store. Today it houses the tourist office and also has a double room to host exhibitions. From its 180 meters of walkway you can see wonderful views over the Duero river and the city of Toro.
