The Royal Church of San Miguel is located in the Plaza Mayor of Segovia, within the walled enclosure of this city, declared a Historic Site by Decree of July 12, 1941. Center of community life and organization, it appears closely linked to history and memory of the city of Segovia. A religious center but also a political and administrative center, the church was the scene of important events and public activities; the coronation of Queen Isabella the Catholic took place there and its atrium was the venue for the city council or town hall. After the collapse in 1532 of the primitive Romanesque temple of San Miguel, it was decided in 1536 to build a new temple in a slightly displaced location with respect to the previous location. The architectural structure of the Royal Church of San Miguel, whose construction ended in 1587, corresponds to the last Gothic period and due to its composition, its spatial conception and system of vaults, the authorship of the circle of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, master builder, is suspected. of the new cathedral of Segovia. Heiress of the disappeared Romanesque temple, it preserves its ancient invocation and uses, both outside and inside, materials from the old construction.

Of particular note are the funerary complexes in the Rueda chapel with the alabaster tombs of the alderman Diego de Rueda and his wife, the work of Juan Rodríguez's workshop, and the chapel of the illustrious Segovian doctor Laguna (1510-1559), a doctor, humanist and philologist from prestige in the court of Emperor Charles V and Pope Julius III, one of the most exceptional spaces of this type in Segovia.
