Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso
Summer residence of the Bourbons during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1720, Philip V bought the land from the friars of the Parral community. The architect Teodoro Ardemans transformed the convent building into a palace attached to a church and flanked by four towers with slate spires.
It has squares with names reflecting local customs and traditions: the Palace Square, the Market Square, the Canons' Square, the Barley Square, and another, for dreamers, called Melancholy Square. Its urban planning is neoclassical.
The landscaping was entrusted to a team from Versailles, France. The Royal Gardens form a baroque and elegant setting, where botanical richness and water features are prominent.
A new space , the La Granja Fountains Interpretation Center, has been created within the Palace. This new space is dedicated to the conservation, research, and dissemination of one of the most outstanding hydraulic and sculptural ensembles in Spanish heritage. It showcases how the gardens were created and how their water features work. The center is complemented by a proposal to explore the gardens of this Royal Site as an open-air museum. New information points along the paths, featuring QR codes, reveal how they were designed, who transformed them, and what stories they hold. The visit is further enhanced by a web application accessible from mobile phones, offering guided tours and content for families.
