"Counting Music" is a music appreciation talk led by Ávila-born conductor José Luis López Antón, principal conductor of the Avila Symphony Orchestra. This initiative stems from this young musician's desire to bring the audience closer to the intricacies of the great masterpieces in the history of music.
Using accessible, relatable language and avoiding technical jargon , "Contando la Música" seeks to foster the enjoyment of classical music through guided comprehension, so that the audience can gain a more concrete understanding of the different stylistic currents in the history of music.
In October, the strains of Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 "From the New World," by A. Dvorak, will be heard.
Composed in 1893 during the composer's stay in the United States, this symphony fuses European symphonic tradition with influences from African-American spirituals and evocative melodies from American and Native American folklore. It is one of the most performed works in the universal symphonic repertoire.
The work is developed in four movements:
- 1. Adagio – Allegro molto (E minor): Slow and somber introduction followed by an allegro in sonata form, with contrasting themes between energy and intimacy.
- 2. Largo (D-flat major): Evocative and nostalgic English horn melody, with a spiritual chant feel. The contrasting sections are more tense and dramatic.
- 3. Scherzo: Molto vivace (E minor): Dance rhythms with echoes of Czech and American folk music. The central trio has a pastoral character.
- 4. Allegro con fuoco (E minor – E major): Energetic and heroic finale. Motifs from earlier movements reappear, culminating in a majestic closing in E major.
The work combines European formal solidity with a melodic and rhythmic language inspired by the "New World."
