For the third consecutive year, and commissioned by the Castilian-Leonese Institute of Language, José Ignacio García, one of the foremost specialists in novels and short stories currently being written in our region, returns with his panoramic and expectant vision to scan the territories of short and long-distance regional narrative. After his two previous experiences ( The Call of the Books and The Future is Written ), where he focused on the works that had chosen him as a reader and the new values of our literature written in prose, this time he focuses his attention on those essential and fully mature writers who, far from remaining in no man's land, inhabit the land of all self-respecting readers, and whose words distill the pure essence of quality literature, regardless of whether they have been recognized, or not, with awards of considerable relevance and whether their work enjoys, or not, the favor of the major publishing houses.

These are essential and indispensable authors, in some cases due to their long and recognized career, in others because of what their vast background contributes to the ethnography and culture of their land, some more because they have made the story (or the short story) their impregnable bastion and there are even some for whom the quality of a publication has served to place them in the novelistic Olympus, removing them for a few moments from their poetic prestige.

By age, the nine names on this list should be professionally retired. Fortunately, great writers never become modest pensioners, despite some who say that once they reach their golden age, an author faces the precipices of decline. And these essential writers, who have told everything so well so far, still have many brilliant stories to tell.

The conference, which will last approximately fifty-five minutes and will feature audiovisual support, will focus on the lives and narrative works of nine authors born between 1944 and 1961. Some have focused their prolific creativity on the novel, others combine prose and verse in their publications (or even essays and plays), and a couple of them dedicate themselves exclusively to short stories. It also happens that most are migratory birds that have abandoned their birthplaces to nest in other places in Castile or León, or beyond our borders. These nine essential writers, with their birthplaces and current residences, are:

• Jesús Carazo (Burgos, 1944 / Bordeaux / Burgos)

• Ignacio Sanz (Lastras de Cuéllar, 1953 / Segovia)

• Gregorio Fernández Castañón (Otero de Curueño, 1956 / Leon)

• Luis Marigómez (Nava de la Asunción, 1957 / Valladolid)

• Yolanda Izard (Béjar, 1959 / Valladolid)

• Luis García Jambrina (Zamora, 1960 / Salamanca)

• Ramón García Mateos (Salamanca, 1960 / Cambrils)

• Victoria Pelayo Rapado (Zamora, 1960 / Cáceres)

• Gonzalo Calcedo (Palencia, 1961 / Santander)
