Avila Museum. The pieces presented on this occasion correspond to two sets of traditional attire associated with ritual figures from Muñogrande (Avila), known as the "Hidalgos." Each one consists of a brightly colored jacket and breeches, forming a harlequin-like ensemble. They were worn by the young men of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy on Corpus Christi. These "Hidalgo" costumes from the late 19th century from Muñogrande, donated to the Museum, are illustrative of how Corpus Christi was celebrated in this town, as the young men of the Brotherhood dressed in them to go out in the procession accompanying the monstrance. This practice has been common in numerous Spanish towns, in many cases accompanied by ritual dances, featuring very similar figures. In the case of these Muñogrande garments, their importance must be highlighted, since, to this day, they are the first preserved material vestige of this type of ritual in the province of Avila.
The pieces will be presented with a lecture by ethnographer Carlos del Peso Taranco, entitled "Hidalgos, Jews and Animeros. The Corpus Christi festival in the towns of Avila", on October 23, at 7:00 p.m., at the Casa de los Deanes, with free admission until full capacity and streaming at the EXHIBITIONS AND ACTIVITIES MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OF CASTILLA Y LEÓN
