Breezes of Spain
Antonio Hernández Moreno, 2025
Óscar de la Cinna (1836-1906) was a Hungarian composer and pianist trained by Carl Czerny and Franz Liszt. After abandoning his law studies, he gave concerts throughout Europe and settled in Spain as a teacher and composer. He wrote more than a thousand works for piano, many of which were published in Spain. Initially, he composed salon pieces influenced by Beethoven, but later adopted a style inspired by Spanish folk music, especially from Andalusia. His work, comparable in importance to that of Pablo Sarasate, elevated folk melodies to a high artistic level. May this book and the accompanying recordings serve to awaken interest in his study and rediscovery, as well as to open new lines of research that will lead us to know and love our Spanish music and culture more fully.
Antonio Hernández Moreno has dedicated his life to teaching and music. He trained in flute and pedagogy in Murcia. His arrangements of Spanish music by Louis Gottschalk earned him a grant for the Fifth Centenary of the Discovery of America. As an educator, he promoted active music teaching in the classroom, publishing several books. His latest research is compiled in this book, Breezes of Spain: The Spanish Universe of the Austro-Hungarian Composer Óscar de la Cinna (1836-1906), which includes two CDs with the world premiere recording of some thirty Spanish piano works by this composer.
