The ninetieth anniversary of Justo Alejo's birth allows us to revisit one of the most enigmatic figures among the writers of Castilla y León. Born in Formariz de Sayago (Zamora), he began his military career at the Villanubla Air Base. He lived in Valladolid between 1954 and 1966, and it was here that he began his literary career, contributing to the magazines Triunfo and Poesía, and where he formed friendships with Valladolid writers such as Francisco Pino.
In 1965, he published an anonymous book of poems, Alaciar, in Valladolid. Much of his poetic work is scattered throughout specialized publications, such as the magazine Trece de Nieve and the Pliegos Poéticos Vallisoletanos, published by the Relieve Antiquarian Bookstore. He always tried to publish using anagrams of his name or anonymously. He was a regular contributor to the newspaper El Norte de Castilla and the magazine Triunfo, writing on literary and social topics. He conceived a total of fifteen books of poems, conducted sociological, anthropological, and folkloric studies and research, wrote several screenplays, and produced translations. He committed suicide in Madrid by jumping from the fourth floor of the Ministry of the Air on January 11, 1979.
This exhibition of his archive, donated to the Jorge Guillén Foundation in 1995, is designed to celebrate a style of writing that, while at the forefront of the avant-garde, was always committed to a social purpose. Visitors will be able to see editions of his works, manuscripts, correspondence, and photographs that trace the life and literary journey of a writer who was singular in both his life and work.
