Insects have been on Earth for over 475 million years. And how long is that? Dinosaurs appeared about 225 million years ago and disappeared about 65 million years ago; that is, we saw them come and go.
We are small but incredibly versatile , which is why we have survived the five major mass extinctions that have occurred since we have been on Earth. In terms of both number and diversity, insects are the most important group in the Animal Kingdom. We make up almost 70% of all species . You've probably all heard of names like: butterflies, beetles, grasshoppers, flies, bees, wasps, ants, mantises, cockroaches, termites, lice, fleas, dragonflies, bed bugs, and so on.
We have managed to adapt to many environments, some as difficult as oil (Psilopa petrolei), geysers at 48 ºC (Scatella thermarum), in newly consolidated lava flows (Stereocaulophilus volcanius), desert sands at 60 ºC (Cataglyphis sp.), the surface of the oceans (Halobates sp.) or in the salty waters of Mono Lake in the USA (Ephydra hians).
Join us throughout the exhibition and we'll no longer be your "invisible friend." You'll see who we are, what we do, and how we can help you. At the last panel, we'll ask you for something…
