Antonín Dvořák (Nelahozeves, 1841–Prague, 1904): Post-Romantic composer from Bohemia. A leading exponent of Czech nationalism in music. His father owned a hotel, was a professional zither player, and a butcher. Dvořák was the eldest of 14 children, raised in the Catholic faith and the Bohemian tradition, both of which greatly influenced his music. He received his first musical instruction at the primary school in his village, excelling at the violin. At the age of 13, he was sent to Złonice to live with his uncle and learn German. He received lessons in piano, organ, and violin.
