In this new session of Musical Afternoons, we will explore the life and work of Sir John Tavener, understanding his music not as a discourse that fills the sonic space, but as an invitation to create a threshold to silence. Through expansive tempos, bare harmonies, and an extreme economy of resources, Tavener proposes a different kind of listening: slow, attentive, and profoundly introspective. His work reminds us that silence is not absence, but a place of meaning, spirituality, and transcendence, and that listening to his music is, in essence, learning to listen to the silence that sustains it.
