A young farmer, having studied at university, returns to his native village as "Erasmus Montanus," a Latinized name meant to sound scholarly. He no longer speaks like the villagers, scorns their ignorance, and boasts of his education, even stating things like "the Earth is round," which causes a great scandal in the village, whose inhabitants still believe it is flat. Erasmus arrogantly tries to impose his wisdom, believing that academic knowledge makes him superior. But instead of respect, he inspires rejection. His pedantry jeopardizes his relationship with his girlfriend and his connection to the community.
