Dangerous Liaisons is an excellent play by Christopher Hampton, based on the novel of the same name by Choderlos de Laclos, which has only been performed once in Madrid. Although the novel was published in 1782, it addresses highly relevant issues today, such as the abuse of power, consent, and how money, unfortunately, can buy almost anything. Valmont and Merteuil, its protagonists, two fascinating and morally bankrupt characters, as Jean-Paul Sartre described them, are not far removed from people like Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, to name just two of the celebrities involved in one of the many scandals we have witnessed in recent years. Dangerous Liaisons , a book that burns like ice, as Baudelaire said, speaks of things that have happened, but that still continue to happen, of how the most powerful classes are able to play with the less fortunate with total impunity, and of how sex and the need to possess often mark our lives.

Christopher Hampton himself said shortly after the premiere of his play: "What is fascinating about this story is its enduring relevance. The manipulation of feelings and the use of love as a weapon are themes as relevant today as they were in the 18th century."
