The Castilian and Leonese Institute of Language and the Segovia City Council are organizing a new session of "Telling the Story of Music," a music appreciation talk given by José Luis López Antón, director of the Avila Symphony Orchestra, on Monday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Segovia Public Library . In this latest session, López Antón will analyze the score of the popular ballet "The Three-Cornered Hat " by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla.
This is a ballet in two acts, with a libretto by Gregorio Martínez Sierra, based on the novel of the same name by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. It premiered in London in 1919 with sets by Picasso and choreography by Léonide Massine for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The score integrates symphonic language with elements of Andalusian folklore: seguidillas, fandangos, farrucas, and jotas, treated with great timbral and rhythmic richness. The orchestration is brilliant, with notable use of percussion and brass.
