Galdós in Love 2023 is a theatrical reinterpretation, a comedy performed by María José Goyanes, Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, and Marta Gutiérrez-Abad, exploring the romantic and epistolary relationship between Benito Pérez Galdós and Emilia Pardo Bazán. On stage, we find ourselves at the beginning of the show's creation, recalling the events when the actors first received the texts of "Galdós in Love" and how those initial meetings, readings, and rehearsals began. From this starting point, they read, discuss, and develop this fictional narrative, a construct centered on love, creation, friendship, admiration, and manipulation. Around these circumstances, the framework of the piece is woven, inventing a fictional account, both read and suggested, of their mutual admiration, infatuation, and the aforementioned correspondence. The relationship between these two giants of Spanish literature was reflected, and quite thoroughly detailed, in their correspondence. But there is one circumstance that makes it extraordinary: the letters she wrote to him are preserved, housed in the Pérez Galdós House-Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, while his letters have disappeared. We know nothing of them. Their loss or destruction continues to fuel rumors and extraordinary speculations about their fate. We are memories. Memories that the passage of time alters, distorting them for better or for worse. All we have left is literature. Where are Benito Pérez Galdós and Emilia Pardo Bazán today? That is the question that has launched us into this adventure and new theatrical endeavor.
