On Friday, May 22nd, at 7pm, Alfonso Galletero Sepúlveda will present his book.
Now that the idea of reinstating military service is beginning to take root in many European countries—compulsory in some cases, voluntary in others—, Tell What We Were is a journey back in time to 1983, when the protagonists of this story spent a long year of their lives "serving the homeland" in the Almansa 5 Cavalry Regiment, in Leon.
This story isn't just another one of those famous "military service stories" that our girlfriends hated and that bored our friends who had managed to avoid military service. It's, above all, a story of friendship, camaraderie, sacrifice, and memory: the recollection of a time when, beyond the hardships—and there were many—what remains for the untold history of this country is the enormous number of young Spaniards from all walks of life who, complete strangers and with only their age as a common bond, met, lived together, suffered, and were hardened by that experience… much against their will. "Our geographical origins were never an obstacle. Nor was it our shared nationality that united us, as often happens when you go abroad and meet other compatriots. No. It wasn't that. What united us was, initially, adversity; then, camaraderie—I'll cover for you, you cover for me—and finally, friendship." At a time when nationalism, identity politics, regionalism, and even "terrentialism"—forgive the expression—were already simmering, these six young people never considered that their origins could be an obstacle to their friendship. On the contrary: they embraced their diversity and accepted it for what it was, proof of a pluralistic belonging to a country born from so many cultures.
