A 20th-century French composer. His work, linked to Impressionism, sometimes displays a bold Neoclassical style. He possessed a complex legacy that revolutionized piano and orchestral music. He is considered a master of orchestration and formal perfection.

He was born in the French Basque Country, the son of a civil engineer. His mother was of Basque origin, descended from a Spanish family (Deluarte or Eluarte). The influence of his Basque origins on Maurice Ravel's musical imagination is debated, since the composer did not return to the Basque Country before the age of 25. Later, he would travel regularly to Saint-Jean-de-Luz for holidays or work.
