The lecture on Spanish lullabies was given by Federico García Lorca on December 13, 1928 at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid.
This is a dazzling text that blends García Lorca's intellectual and investigative rigor with his most lyrical side. The author presents, in a way that is both beautiful and chilling, that first encounter of the baby with literature and celebrates the indelible mark it leaves on their heart forever. Ultramarinos de Lucas recreates this passionate lecture, bringing to life on stage the words and lullabies that Federico so meticulously collected, showcasing the melodic fusion of the different regions of Spain.
In our staging, we aimed to ensure that the poetry, clothed in imagery, reaches the audience with clarity. In the dreamlike space created by three chairs, like three tiny stages, a vibrant dialogue unfolds between Lorca's discourse, brimming with metaphors, and the poignant music of traditional lullabies.
A lecturer, Jorge Padín walks and speaks, dropping papers like wounded birds, savoring the words Federico García Lorca drew. The actor plays with a few origami figures, evocative elements reminiscent of a tiny puppet theater like those Lorca loved so much.
Meanwhile, Elena Aranoa, accompanied by a guitar and simple percussion instruments, delicately sings the lullabies Lorca refers to in his lecture, originating from different parts of Spain. Her powerful voice carries the emotion of the melody and the heartbeat of the lullabies to the listener's ear.
