Broken dreams. Childhood in the Sima de los Huesos

This exhibition presents three fossil skulls from the Sima de los Huesos cave in the Cueva Mayor section of the Sierra de Atapuerca archaeological site (Burgos). These are pre-Neanderthal human remains. None of the three skulls belong to an adult. They died during what we call pre-adolescence, the end of childhood, the age of dreams and fantasies. One of these three individuals is the exceptional Skull 14, Benjamina, which belongs to a girl with a rare cranial malformation: the premature closure of a suture in the skull. Despite this condition, the girl lived for years, suggesting that she received care and attention from the group.

Mauricio Antón. Art and paleontology

A tour of the highlights of the artistic and scientific work of the paleontological illustrator Mauricio Antón, closely linked to the Atapuerca project and who has given a face to the most emblematic species of the Atapuerca Sites such as 'Homo antecessor' or the pre-Neanderthals of the Sima de los Huesos.

Mauricio Antón's first works in the field of paleontological illustration were collaborations with paleontologists specializing in the study and reconstruction of Mesozoic faunas, including of course the dinosaurs, but also other groups of extinct animals.

Paleoart is more than the creation of images of prehistoric life: it is a process of reconstruction in which the images are the visual embodiment of scientific hypotheses, created from the study of fossils and their interpretation in biological terms.

East Congo. Eduardo Margareto

In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds of children live in extreme poverty, struggling to even access a single meal a day. They have no access to education, let alone healthcare. Furthermore, many are orphans, having lost both or one parent. To try and alleviate this situation, the Burgos-based NGO, Proyecto RubareKivu Jambo, has been working in this region for years. Rubare, Goma, Bukavu, and the island of Idjwi are the settings for the 50 photographs and 4 short documentaries that make up this exhibition. It's a visual journey into the heart of a territory marked by hardship, but also by the daily resilience of its inhabitants.

Homo antecessor. The discovery of a species

On July 8, 1994, at level 6 of Gran Dolina, archaeologist Aurora Martín began unearthing what appeared to be a human tooth. A few minutes later, José María Bermúdez de Castro confirmed the human nature of the tooth, which forever changed the history of the peopling of the Eurasian continent. From then on, dozens of human fossils were discovered, the study of which led to the identification of a new species called Homo antecessor. In collaboration with the Atapuerca Foundation.
