Carqueixa: Barranco Cerezo fire
Juan Prieto Alatamira
Carqueixa is a novel written from the author's personal experience working in firefighting operations over several years. The narrative goes far beyond a description of the technical resources and delves into the human relationships of those involved. It explores the feelings of frustration and helplessness, the sometimes relaxed, sometimes tense and critical work environment among the personnel involved. Furthermore, the phases of a fire are described perfectly and engagingly.
In the summer of 2025, Spain experienced the most devastating wildfires in its recent history. The largest, which originated in the province of Zamora, exceeded 200 kilometers in perimeter. The result was unbearable: the landscape, the villages, and the lives of thousands of people were forever scarred.
It is a story written from a place of love for the land. Through an expert and privileged perspective, it reveals the wound inflicted by fire and aims to be a wake-up call so that we do not forget.
Juan Preito Altamira (Zamora, 1964) is a Forestry Engineer with extensive experience in fighting forest fires. Throughout his career, he has held a wide variety of roles within firefighting operations.
He has served as Fire Chief and Sector Chief in numerous Level 2 fires, accumulating direct and in-depth experience on the ground that gives him a comprehensive knowledge of the actual operation of emergency devices.
Currently, he combines his activity as a self-employed professional with salaried jobs during the summer seasons.
