THE ROMAN is the hilarious story of a provincial man who has only read one book in his life, about Romans, and that book has instilled in him a strange and dangerous fascination. Taking advantage of the absence of a lecturer, he decides to give a talk on the Roman Empire to an unsuspecting audience. He takes it so seriously that he ends up becoming one of the characters he's talking about, in an atmosphere of unreality, with generous doses of surreal humor and a final twist that only confirms what those great intellectuals, Asterix and Obelix, thought: Are these Romans crazy? The Roman is a reflection on man's inability to adapt to his environment, on obsessions, on the cultural references that shape us, but all of it expressed with humor.

José Luis Alonso de Santos has premiered more than twenty plays with great success. Among them are: *La estanquera de Vallecas*, *El álbum familiar*, and *Bajarse al moro*. The work of José Luis Alonso de Santos is unanimously acclaimed by critics and has been awarded, among others, the National Theatre Prize, the Tirso de Molina Prize, the Rojas Zorrilla Prize, the Aguilar Prize, and the Baco de Andalucía Prize. Alonso de Santos is not only a great writer, but can also be considered a chronicler of our time who, through humor and a personal style, describes and critiques the most immediate and painful realities, making us feel closer to the losers of history.
