The Zamora Municipal Band (BMZ) is a prestigious instrumental ensemble with over a century of history, heir to the former Provincial Band. Together with its Music School , it forms a key cultural and educational project for the city, dedicated to training instrumentalists and promoting the band repertoire.
Although their repertoire is varied – encompassing commercial music, folk music, orchestral music, film scores, Latin music, contemporary music, academic music and also music specific to the flute instrument – in this concert they present a quarterly project dedicated to Baroque music.
Concert repertoire
- Aria for the G string, JS Bach (Orchestral Suite no. 3, BWV 1068)
- Fantasies for solo flute, GF Telemann (V,VI,VII)
- Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben [The heart, the mouth, the acts and the life], JS Bach (Cantata BWV. 147)
- Vivaldi Concerto in G minor (RV. 156)
Much of the repertoire for the transverse flute is shared with the recorder (commonly known as the "flute"); work by consorts—groups of players from each instrument family with bass, alto, and soprano—is particularly prominent. Examples of the transverse flute performing in ensembles and within orchestras are less common compared to the then more popular recorder, and therefore, this concert features adaptations of some of the best-known Baroque pieces, including several arias and cantatas, culminating in a Baroque concerto.
For years , the Flute Classroom at the BMZ School has been dedicated to sharing the world of the transverse flute, with ensemble performances such as Christmas carols and accompaniment for theatrical productions. Under the tutelage of their teacher, Juan Alonso Villarroya, children learn about instruments related to the concert flute, progressing from flutes of different sizes (Alto Flute and Piccolo) to historical flutes (Baroque Flute). This last flute, a reproduction from the 18th century, is the star of the concert, and pieces from the repertoire will be performed on this instrument.
