The relentless pursuit of landscape in its original state—nature and its transformations—has led Santiago Santos (Salamanca, 1964) to develop a body of work throughout his career that questions, challenges, and expands the relationship between humankind and the most primal—in its most natural aspect—that surrounds us. His journey through this photographic genre has reflected his constant desire to capture the echoes of an organic quality in natural space, revealed to us in its traces, in our gaze, and in the construction of a concept that the artist unravels through both close proximity and distance. Thus, his photographic journey can be interpreted as a sustained inquiry, on the one hand, into what he is able to retain through his camera: memory, time, the gaze; and on the other hand, into what inevitably eludes him.

Before the Landscape, the aim is neither a temporal description nor an exercise in resistance understood as a portrait of the territory before it becomes an image. The title of this exhibition is the nomenclature of a permanent condition in which there exists a nature that will always precede the landscape, that will not fully mutate into it, because, needing legibility and distance to become a cultural operation, this nature will offer neither one nor the other.

Santiago Santos practices and proposes a relationship with the environment based on attention, patience, and the recognition that what exists around us deserves to be looked at with seriousness, care, and affection.
That's what photography, in the hands of Santiago Santos, does: it looks seriously. And it asks us to do the same.
