Dwelling: Phenomenology of lived space
Manuel Doval
Numancia Publishing House, 2026

Dwelling is, above all, a way of being in the world: a form of existence that manifests in the body, settles in memory, and is projected onto the land. Architecture and the city cannot be understood solely as technique, object, or style, but rather as lived experience, as a sensory atmosphere, and as a moral inscription in everyday life. This perspective engages with a tradition that runs through phenomenology, philosophy, and architecture—from Heidegger to Bachelard, from Merleau-Ponty to Pallasmaa—and seeks to take root in the concrete experience of life. This book proposes a reflection that unites experience and thought to understand how the spaces we inhabit ultimately shape us.

Manuel Doval, PhD in Urban Planning and Architecture, has combined professional activity with teaching and research at the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid and at universities in Brazil, Chile and Ecuador, with publications in Spain and Latin America, such as Epistemology of Architecture and Architecture of Being .
