Broken dreams. Childhood in the Sima de los Huesos

This exhibition presents three fossil skulls from the Sima de los Huesos cave in the Cueva Mayor section of the Sierra de Atapuerca archaeological site (Burgos). These are pre-Neanderthal human remains. None of the three skulls belong to an adult. They died during what we call pre-adolescence, the end of childhood, the age of dreams and fantasies. One of these three individuals is the exceptional Skull 14, Benjamina, which belongs to a girl with a rare cranial malformation: the premature closure of a suture in the skull. Despite this condition, the girl lived for years, suggesting that she received care and attention from the group.

Homo antecessor. The discovery of a species

On July 8, 1994, at level 6 of Gran Dolina, archaeologist Aurora Martín began unearthing what appeared to be a human tooth. A few minutes later, José María Bermúdez de Castro confirmed the human nature of the tooth, which forever changed the history of the peopling of the Eurasian continent. From then on, dozens of human fossils were discovered, the study of which led to the identification of a new species called Homo antecessor. In collaboration with the Atapuerca Foundation.

Playevolucion MEH

Since 1974, the Playmobil world has grown, representing not only human figures but also situations, both real and fantastical. Thanks to this infinite possibility of adaptation, the MEH (Museum of Human Evolution) is exhibiting a diorama to explore different events that took place at the Atapuerca archaeological sites, depicted with these figures.

Animalia. Fauna in iron

The MEH is exhibiting a collection of iron sculptures by the renowned Burgos artist Cristino Díez. The artist's intention is for these large-scale animal figures to evoke times past.
