Synopsis:

On a bench in Salamanca 's Campo , Carmen, an eleven-year-old girl, encounters an elderly man reading the newspaper: Don Miguel de Unamuno. A conversation ensues between them that, under the guise of a game or children's chat, evolves into a profound dialogue about memory, freedom, doubt, faith, and the meaning of life.

Through questions filled with a child's innocence and answers brimming with wisdom and melancholy, Carmen awakens in the aging writer a tenderness that rekindles his sense of wonder and hope. Decades later, that little girl, now recognized as the great author Carmen Martín Gaite , would recall that encounter as one of the seeds of her own writing. "Rhymes with Unamuno" is an intergenerational dialogue where words, curiosity, listening, and patience reveal themselves as the only refuges against oblivion.

Retahílas con Unamuno is an original theatrical piece of an intimate nature. It simulates an encounter between an elderly Miguel de Unamuno, at the end of his life, and a young Carmen Martín Gaite. The play has a timeless character, and the intergenerational dialogue that arises between Unamuno and young Carmen can resonate with people of all eras.

The activity is part of the BiblioEscena 2026 program: performing arts in the library, promoted by the General Directorate of Cultural Policies of the Junta de Castilla y León, in which theater companies linked to ARTESA (Association of Performing Arts Companies of Castilla y León) participate.
