Light years: two decades of a Latin American chronicle
Jacobo Garcia
Anagrama Publishing House, 2026
Light Years compiles more than two decades of Jacobo García's work as a correspondent in Mexico, Central America, Venezuela, Colombia, and Haiti for media outlets such as Cope, El Mundo, Associated Press, Clarín, and El País. This book is a long chronicle of his professional career, drawing on his reports, unpublished pages from his notebook, newsroom discussions, and conversations with colleagues after intense assignments.
The author, a tireless and daring reporter, explores some of the most important episodes in recent Latin American history through themes that appear repeatedly in his texts: violence, authoritarianism, climate change and natural disasters, courageous women, and the power of culture.
These pages feature a parade of very different characters and places: the Ciudad Juárez prison during an interview with a hitman, the decapitated heads thrown by drug traffickers onto a dance floor in Michoacán, Bukele's rise in El Salvador, Peña Nieto's visit to the Guadalajara Book Fair, the 43 Mexican students from Ayotzinapa, the tensions between Chávez and Uribe, and interviews with charismatic figures like Chavela Vargas and Shakira.
All the stories in Light Years , narrated with the power and credibility that García's extensive journalistic experience provides, have a political focus, but are neither dogmatic nor militant. They allow us to observe diverse realities through the eyes of the shaman María Sabina, the Patrons of the Veracruz train, Jovenel Moïse, the assassinated president of Haiti, and the courageous local journalists. It's a personal way of narrating the current events of this century in Latin America, where news and the raw power of everyday life intertwine on the same pages.
Jacobo García (Monforte de Lemos, Lugo, 1976) began his journalistic career at COPE radio. For more than two decades, he was a correspondent in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean for El Mundo , Associated Press, and El País . Since 2023, he has been part of the El País newsroom in Madrid. He edited the article that won the 2017 Gabo Award for Innovation and received the 2021 Gabo Award for Best Coverage and the 2021 True Story Award. Años luz (Light Years) , winner of the 7th Anagrama Prize for Chronicle Writing/Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation, is his first book.
