The castle of Saldaña was home to Romans, Visigoths and Arabs, until Alfonso I conquered it for Christendom. Inside the castle died the queen Ms. Urraca, daughter of Alfonso VI.

Its military importance declined until becoming prison, subject to disputes between the Count de la Villa and several mayors of the time. It is currently in ruins.
