Holy Week
The tradition of silence/ Contemplation and passion
Via Crucis Youth
This activity was born at the beginning of the 80s of the s. XX, as a theatrical representation of the hard path that Jesus Christ made until he reached the Mount of Olives where he was crucified, it takes place on the afternoon of Holy Thursday. The chosen setting is the main façade of the church of San Juan Bautista, in the Romanesque-Mudejar style, where the performance begins with the Last Supper.
The square becomes the stage where the different scenes of the passion and death of Jesus Christ are represented.
The inhabitants of the municipality embody different characters from the Bible, giving life to scenes as dramatic as the crying and expression of rage of a mother at the death and pain of her son who is subjected to all kinds of harassment by the soldiers. Romans to exhaustion; the kindness of a woman who approaches him to dry his wounds and quench his thirst; the cruelty of the Roman soldiers whipping him tied to a column; Pontius Pilate, washing his hands and not wanting to know anything about the crime that is going to be committed; or the falls that Jesus suffers due to exhaustion when dragging a heavy cross-shaped piece of wood on which he will be crucified.
During the performance, which lasts approximately two hours, a music band accompanies all the characters on their journey, playing emotional pieces in keeping with the work.
The play ends with the crucifixion of Christ, an act that is represented in an area on the outskirts of town, on a hillock that has become his private Golgotha, where the last scenes take place with the beating of a drum before Jesus is crucified, and before the respectful and impressionable gaze of the public that comes year after year to see this exciting sacramental play.
