The foundation was instigated by Alfonso VIII and it was the fourth abbot, San Martín de Finojosa who began the construction of the monastery, which is consistent with the style of the Order. The monastery is Romanesque-Gothic-Plateresque.

The refectory is a masterpiece of Cistercian art with one nave covered with vaults. In the Cloister the staircase in the wall, under arches, which leads to the pulpit, is noteworthy.

Occupied by Cistercian Monks.Guesthouse, house of spirituality / museum. This monastery dating from the 12th and 13th centuries is an ideal place for rest and prayer. The guests can take part in the mass which is sung by the monks and there is woodland nearby for walks.
