The enclosure seems to have been part of an earlier synagogue or mosque and is built on the remains of the former Romanesque Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor, around 1561.

The ashlars tower dates from the late 17th century and stands by the entrance on the Evangelist side. The church features typically late Gothic decorative motives such as balls, roses and acanthus leaves.

It contains the sepulchre of the dukes (1619) and a Gothic grid (1534) in the presbytery by the master Osón, who was the attendant of the grid-maker Juan Francés. Particularly noteworthy are the Cristo de Medinacelli, a sculpture dating from the 16thcentury) and the Romanesque crypt.
