During the Middle Ages, along with the so-called Mudejar carpentry of intricate lacework, there coexisted another exclusively decorated with paintings. The possibility that carpentry offered to profile the different pieces of wood in workshops located on site facilitated the work of the painters, who undertook their task once the carpenters' work had been completed and before the final assembly of the covers. First, they applied several layers of plaster and glue to the wood to facilitate the incorporation of the paint and give it greater luminosity. The painting was generally done using the tempera technique. To do this, they dissolved mineral and vegetable pigments in oil, water and egg white with which they executed designs such as those on the armor of the presbytery of Saludes de Castroponce, a work from the second half of the 15th century in which vegetal, geometric and heraldic motifs predominate. of gothic tradition.
