Its construction began in 1515. It was the seat of the Cortes Generales and of royal boards. With Juan Francisco Alonso Pimentel housed the best private collection of art that has existed in Valladolid. The Palace of the Counts of Benavente was one of the most important palaces of the city. Scene of Corte, it served as residence to the royal family (to Felipe II in 1559 and Felipe III in 1601), and place of birth of the Infanta Ms. Ana Mauricia, future Queen of France, and the Infanta Ms. Maria, daughter of Felipe III and Margarita of Austria. It suffered serious fires in 1667 and 1716.

The main facade overlooks the square. On the sides there are towers that have been totally rebuilt. The main patio only conserves the lower part of its original structure.
