The Valdelajo Cave was discovered by chance in 1999 during surveys for the exploitation of a quarry, near the town of Sahelices de Sabero. An extensive study carried out by the Matallana Speleological Group (Leon) highlighted the beauty and interest of the cavity and its formations, recommending a high degree of protection for it, compatible with an orderly visit. Since then, with a significant effort economically, the Sabero City Council, supported by the Provincial Council of Leon and the Montaña de Riaño Local Action Group, has been carrying out all the work to improve access to the cave, interior adaptation and lighting, following the technical criteria necessary to preserve the cavity and show it to the public in its original state.
