It regulates the water of the river Riaza, which rises in the port of La Quesera and flows into the Duero, 100 miles later, near Roa (Burgos).

Water flow through a spectacular canyon where dozens of vultures are nesting, protected in a nature reserve, and it is common to follow its flight visually. Linares Dam is located in a spectacular setting since it was built between huge rock walls which protect the river.

From the high area, you can see the remains of the hermitage of Linares, whose apse and belfry emerge from the waters when the reservoir level lowers down a bit
