The beauty of a safe haven
Rejas de San Esteban
Lying in the west of the province of Soria at a crossroads, this medieval town was built to provide a fortified site for the repopulation and defense line along the River Duero, and to support the strategically important San Esteban de Gormaz.
This is a town built according to the dictates of the terrain. Huddled beneath the hilltop, the streets crisscross the hill as the orography allows. Running from east to west, the town boasts the main street ’ Calle Real ’ and two further streets that extend lengthwise ’ Calle San Ginés and Calle San Martín.
Sites of cultural interest include the churches of San Martín and San Ginés, both superb examples of Soria’s Romanesque architecture. There are also various buildings constructed in the traditional style of this area.
