Castle of Peñafiel
Built in the 15th century by don Pedro Girón, master of the Calatrava Order. It is owned by the town hall. Totally restores, it houses the Wine Museum.
Its ground plan is unusual among the castles in the Valladolid area, due to the architect's need to adapt the structure to the land. The present castle is unfinished. The rooms have vaulted ceilings. The way they are connected to the straight staircase has led experts to relate it to the towers of Fuensaldaña, Torrelobatón, Fuentes de Valdepero and Belmonte de Campos, attributed to Gómez Díaz de Isla.
Peñafiel represented, together with its castle, a strategic point along the Duero defensive line, both for the Christian and the Muslim troops, around the 9th and 10th centuries. Upon taking it from the very hands of the Moorish leader Almanzor, in 1013, Sancho García had the first stones laid and proclaimed it ‘the most faithful rock in Castile’.
